Heart to Heart reached out on Saturday to the Kansas City and Topeka area for help for the Haiti relief effort, and residents responded with their hearts and their donations.
Volunteers collected donations at area Sam's Club stores. As is often the case, there are stories behind the donations that are breathtaking.
Here are two such stories related by Heart to Heart volunteer Amy Surface Parsons.
"My sister and I volunteered today collecting donations at Sam's Club in Independence. While there, a 5-year-old boy came up with his piggy bank of money. He and his young sister very quietly put all $118 into the donation box. This was money he was saving for a swing set.
"His mom told us he came to her and asked if he could give his money to the Haitian people. Needless to say, I was crying! I've attached a picture of these sweet children!"
There are thousands of similar tales of local heroism. Here's a second story related by Amy:
"While receiving donations at Sam's Club in Independence today, a young woman with a van full of adorable kids pulled up with donations. As we took the items from her, she told us she was a Hurricane Katrina victim.
"She and her SEVEN children were relocated to the Kansas City area where they knew no one. She knew firsthand how horrible it was to be in the middle of complete devastation and disaster. She gave us a big hug and thanked us over and over for volunteering."
